Your Checklist before moving

Published on the

Moving houses is a stressful period but it is also a milestone in the life of future owners looking forward to feel a home again. This transition can be as smooth and efficient as possible if all the steps are well listed and scheduled. Here are some key moments requiring the right planning and customised logistics.

1. Schedule eveything
Getting thoroughly prepared, around three months beforehand, is highly recommended. Scheduling the steps will help you get through the administrative tasks as well as the actual transfer of your personal belongings. Thus, all the landmarks must be set: date for prior notice to owner if you are a tenant, your children’s school-start, quotations to service providers (professional movers, painters or craftsmen to take care of the house you are leaving, etc.), and a deadline to finalise other tasks (subscription transfers for the newspapers, satellite TV and mail). Be well aware of the time limits.

2. Assess what will be moved
Before moving, it is a must to sort out what needs to be taken as well as what can fit your next home. Ideally, it is better to evaluate your belongings room by room. This method will also provide you with the proper time to choose before letting out, selling or dumping what is not needed. If you want to sell some furniture, you can already publish your ads.

3. The new house and its requirements
One of your prerogatives will be to plan the layout of your next house. Think about its available space, wardrobe size, renovation works and furniture to buy. If you are already selling some pieces of furniture and equipment, they will help you buy others for the next house. It is better to seize the opportunity of seeing it empty to foresee what will fit there. In case, you are planning to take your potted plants or those in the garden, already visualise the place you will put them next and prepare the logistics of transplanting your trees and shrubs.

4. Boxes and packaging required
If you are not planning to use a professional mover, you will have to take care of the different boxes and packaging required for all the household items: books, quilts, toys, clothes… Place them into small, medium-sized and large boxes to avoid too heavy boxes. Use bubble wrap and newspapers for delicate items such as kitchenware and trinkets. Start packing what is less needed such as season decorations, books and kitchen equipment which you scarcely use. It is important to label the boxes accordingly: what they contain and in what room they will be placed in the new house.

5. Moving the pets
It can be a stressful time for your pets and yourself when moving from one house to the other. You can already make them visit the place if possible to get them acquainted. Also make sure that there will be specially designated persons to handle them on D Day so that they do not try to flee, and plan their food and bowls to make them feel at home on arrival.

6. The day before
Unplug the fridge and defrost the freezer (limit the amount of frozen food and cook the rest if possible). Prepare a box with the important items which you will need on arrival: toilet bag, some dishes and glasses, bed sheets and towels.

7. After moving
Once transported, the boxes must be placed according to priorities. Used packaging and boxes can be recycled to avoid crowding up the garage or other rooms, and it is nature-friendly. It can be convenient to spare some time between the moving day and leaving the former place. This will enable you to fill up the holes and paint, if needed as well as take whatever you have left behind such as plants and small objects (chargers etc.).

8. Works in the new house
To make the transition as nice as possible, don’t wait to start the works need in the new house: curtain rods, install cables and decorations. A few days off will be most welcomed to help you settle down.
