The new biometric national identity card of Mauritius

After major projects such as the construction of new airport terminal of Plaisance, the new Terre Rouge – Verdun Road and the road project linking Coromandel to Sorèze, Mauritius is facing new development. A from the 1st of October 2012, Mauritian citizens will enjoy a new version of their national identity card: the biometric version replacing the actual one. Requiring an initial investment of Rs. 1,1 billion, this project is meant to provide Mauritian citizens with a new ID card which make life easier for them by increasing the efficiency of public bodies while reducing bureaucracy.

The new ID card shall be more customized and made of polycarbonate, a relatively long-lasting material. It shall contain laser-etched data such as the holder’s name, picture, identification number, gender, signature, date of birth, residential address, digital certificate, date of issue, biometric fingerprints (thumb and forefinger) and so on. All of these should prevent misuse, fraudulent use and tampering of the new card.

Data displayed on the front of the card:
Black and white picture
Identity number
2 lines to fill in full name, maiden name, gender, date of birth and signature

Important:
• In case a Mauritian citizen is unable to sign, a “No signature” mention will be displayed at the back of the card
• Senior Citizens will receive a special SC logo on their cards which will enable them to benefit from free bus services. They can use the card as a bus pass.
• The new card will be versatile. Holders will no longer have to produce identity proofs such as CWA or CEB bills to public bodies or banks.

• Bar-code
• Card control number
• Identity number
• Date of issue
